there was once a beautiful tree in my garden

yet with the passing of seasons, it grew thick and twisted.

and though i pruned it times aplenty,

to straighten itself it rudely protested.

it was a pity indeed, in my eyes

for though its flowers were so sweetly scented,

despite my repeated intervention,

that it couldn't be as lovely as I'd imagined.

so i took a step back, and then took two.

and both rain and shine retreated to the heavens.

this young sprout, i made an effort to encage

yet to my dismay, it'd never straighten.

the second time around, i decided that

I'd try to guide it with my hands.

but as tightly as i clung to it,

its warped nature had its own demands.

now that we're both creaky and frail,

in the end I admit it's true.

no matter how many times i tried,

that which I wished for, you never grew into.

i now see that some branches can't be pruned

nor can some moments be reversed.

perhaps from the very beginning,

my aim itself had been perverse.

now even if it further twists and turns

I shall cradle this tree gently, from its birth

and cherish its lovely scent too,

until the two of us return to the earth.
